Work at Mr. Silsbee's office has been enjoyable thus far. It's only been a short while but Mr. Silsbee has already given me some detailing work on a church commission. I can tell I've made the right decision in coming to Chicago. There are several other young men here just starting out as well and we're all very happy here and have become rather close. I think I'm making a good impression.

I'm itching to leave Madison. I've taken the drawing courses at the University but I'm not a student like the others. I know I can learn more by doing than by reading texts.

My uncle introduced me to an architect in Chicago, J. L. Silsbee, I'm going to work with him. My mother is unhappy that I'm leaving her, but she's given me the greatest gift a mother could give; A boundless faith that I will succeed. I've already pawned some of my fathers old books and have purchased a train ticket. I'll be leaving by weeks end.
